Signs and Symptoms of Bowel Cancer

As you know, early detection of bowel cancer means patients have a much better chance of having successful treatment. This is where you have an important part to play. It is essential that you are able to identify the possible signs and symptoms of bowel cancer in your patients.


Red Flag Symptoms for bowel cancer:

  1. Red Flag Symptom: Toilet, Blood in faeces. A change to your normal bowel habits that persists for more than six weeks, such as diarrhoea, constipation or passing stools more frequently than usual
  2. Red Flag Symptom: if over 60 or over 40 with other symptoms
  3. Red Flag Symptom: Bowel Feeling of incomplete emptying 'tenesmus'
  4. Red Flag Symptom: Scales Unexplained weight loss
  5. Red Flag Symptom: Mouth Persistant vomiting can be a sign of bowel obstruction
  6. Red Flag Symptom: Abdomen or Tummy Abdominal tenderness, pain or palpable abdominal lump
  7. Red Flag Symptom: Blood Levels Iron deficiency anaemia shown as fatigue and/or breathlessness
  8. Red Flag Symptom: Rectal bleeding If over 60 or over 40 with other symptoms
  9. Over the counter (OTC) medicines Haemorrhoid (piles) preparations, laxatives, anti-diarrhoeal medication. Persistant use can cover up Red Flag Symptoms
